YFB March Issue- People- Bajan Fari {Risse C}

Maybe in the1950’s you would have found him on a ‘soapbox’ in the middle of Bridgetown, giving a voice to the working class, or picketing for the rights of labourers. In 2011 however, the face of public speaking has changed drastically to incorporate the new era of social media, and video blogging or ‘vlogging’ has become the ‘soapbox’ of the new millennia.

Kirk ‘Bajan Fari’ Phillips was born in St. Peter, Barbados on August 20th 1969, but moved to the city of Bridgetown after the passing of his mother. Not one for being ‘coup up in a house’ he was very active from young, from stunting on BMX bicycles to boogie boarding to ‘thiefing de occasional mango’ –all events characteristic of a Bajan upbringing.

But when life started to brew every trouble imaginable for Fari, he decided it was time for a change of scenery, and this prompted his move to the city that never sleeps – New York. Leaving Bimshire over a decade ago, he has witnessed the changes taking place from the outside looking in – both good and bad. One negative change, in his opinion, is the adoption of the American culture by the younger generation, who are quickly losing the authenticity of being Bajan.

This is not the case for ‘Fari’ – as one living abroad he relishes in celebrating Barbadiana in every way possible. From his videos, you will always see the massive flag in the background and the music accompanying it is usually from Bajan underground artistes, who he promotes. His love for country and culture is among the reasons he credits for his smooth transition from Barbados to NYC. He notes that staying grounded is an important factor which allowed him to function in the new environment. This doesn’t mean his heart won’t long for home every once in a while, but he is prepared to make that sacrifice for now so that when the time is right, and he is in a position to return home to help his country.

After watching his vlogs you might think he had a master plan, to create controversy and ‘skin up people apple cart’, but as he tells it this was a case of pure fate and proper timing. After doing a video recapping the events that unfolded at a friend’s party, he was encouraged by Joy `boss lady ` D`Avilar to continue making the videos. Fari decided to take on the issues which we see and choose to ignore or are just too embarrassed to talk about. This has resulted in backlash from some, but “it comes with being the person I am and the truth hurts”.

 Aside from the negative persons here and there, Fari was shocked and appreciative of the swarm of support and the huge following he has gotten since doing the vlogs. He is one of the topical persons to watch for in your news feed, with his videos being circulated like wildfire.
Throughout all of his videos, there is one message he repeats time and time again especially to his younger viewers “looking on to de future and never forgetting de past, always know where ever yuh go yuh will always be a bajan. Make your country proud cause I know I gine try muh best to do de same”

YFB March Issue- Love n' Relationships- How Healthy Is Your Relationship? {Niki H}

There has been much ado in the media lately about the importance of healthy relationships and their health implications.

One study found that bad relationships, i.e. those that cause a high level of stress, literally break the heart leading to heart attacks and other coronary complications. Previously, scientists also found that being single or having “few close relationships” could also have a similar effect.

Sounds quite ominous, doesn’t it? Damned if you do and damned if you don’t!

There are non-scientific, everyday, regular folk who are living out the research conditions in both studies.

There are two very glaring examples that we see everyday, falling on either end of the relationship spectrum. You probably know at least one person who falls into each category:

1. The ‘Serial Monogamist’ a.k.a Just Don’t Wanna Be Lonely *cue Freddie McGregor*
Sex: Male or Female
Motto: Single Never. Booed Up Ever!
Characteristics: This person is always in a relationship. You cannot blink fast enough… The seat where The Ex was sitting literally has no time to cool to room temperature before the next Ex-to-Be is there.
Subject may or may not typically express being in love soon after the new relationship commences.
Subject is often very intuitive and somehow able to foresee the end of a relationship; strategically allowing them enough time to scout, evaluate, select and train the next candidate approved for the job.

2. The Lone Ranger a.k.a ‘Solo Dolo’
Sex: Male or Female
Motto: Money Over (insert derogatory name for either sex here)
Characteristics: This person does not hold relationships in high regard. Carries the Player’s Guide to the Universe in their back pocket or oversized handbag and refers to the ‘Bible of Betrayal’ as fact. All the facts in this holy book are accumulated from the experiences of others except that one… The Creation Story, where some clueless bajohnny ran over the subject’s heart with an army tank.
Subject may also engage in promiscuous behavior but not always. Never speaks highly of Love or any thing remotely related.

Whether or not I’ve created these profiles in jest, you’ve already plucked two faces off your tree of friends that fit the profile or maybe… you just went to the mirror.

Whatever the case may be, the fact remains these profiles are two sides of the same coin. They are just the extreme possibilities that may result from previous hurt, and insecurity.

Neither is ideal. A ‘Serial Monogamist’ who jumps into relationships for the sake of not being lonely, taking no time to get into a relationship with him/herself, is creating that stressful heartbreaking situation over and over again – thinking before they leap from the frying pan to the fire.

‘Solo Dolo’, on the other hand who may just not be sure that what he/she brings to the table is worthy of sharing is also creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.  I am not saying that ‘Solo Dolo’ doesn’t have close relationships with friends and family, but process of love for family and love for a significant other differ somewhat.

‘Solo Dolo’ or ‘Serial Monogamist’, isn’t it hard enough managing exercise, diet and family history? Without having to worry about adding “poor relationship decisions” to the Heart Disease Risk Factors List?

There is nothing wrong with being single or in a relationship, as long as you are doing it for the right reasons.

YFB March Issue- Health n' Fitness- Commitment & Patience {Dre J}

In today's fast paced world, many things can be accessed at the touch of a button; unfortunately this is not the case when it comes to weight loss, toning or muscle building. Many persons don't give themselves a chance to see improvement; they expect to drastic changes in a very short space of time. When one has unrealistic expectations that haven't been met they become discouraged and are setting themselves up for disappointment.

This is why commitment, patience and the setting of realistic goals is of the utmost importance in every aspect of life, not just exercising. In addition to setting realistic goals, person must be honest with themselves when doing their workouts; it doesn't matter how long you spend in the gym, if you spend it sauntering on the treadmill, which minimizes the effectiveness. You are forever staying in your comfort zone and not pushing yourself from the plateau you reached a month ago, fooling yourself into believing you are working out harder than you truly are.

Worst than this, is tricking your mind that you are consuming less calories than you really are. The extra dessert here and upsize of fries and drinks there, adds up over a period of time without you noticing. So be patient and committed to your workout regimen, while always being honest with yourself especially with your diet.

YFB March Issue- Fashion n' Beauty- Simply Elegant? {Paula J}

Recently an event that will remain nameless was announced and the dress code was simply elegant. A lot of persons asked me what that meant making the assumption that I already knew (hurrah the front is working) but I have to admit I bluffed my way through it. A lot of the time I bluff my way through it actually. And being the Young Fabulous Bajan that I am I shouldn’t be faking it ever! This may also explain why I am single but I digress. You shouldn’t be guessing when it comes to dressing, so that’s why I went out into the field to do some research.

I hardly thought I would find this information in the Holy Bible so I went to the next best source of information – Google. The YFB is here to make sure that each of you will be prepared for the upcoming Spring Break festivities, Summer parties etc and avoid the awkward “ OMG -I’m the only one in jeans” moment. Let me add, in the event that you were thinking “only Paula”, there is www.dresscodeguide.com where you select the dress, climate, time of day of the event and your location and you pull up a full description of what to wear. In other words, there is clearly a whole bunch of lost people in the world so we need not be ashamed.

My research did not show a vast difference between males and females in terms of adherence to the code. The reoccurring themes were street wear, casual, business casual, smart casual, business/informal and black tie/formal. Street wear is when a guy can rock his “wife-beater” and shorts and the ladies can follow a similar format. It’s a world where flip-flops are welcome and all is well in the tropics. Casual wear gets a little less grungy and the sleeves get a little longer but t-shirts are still welcome and jeans are still acceptable.

Business casual confuses the best of us, but a polo shirt and slacks is safe for both sexes. Do note however, that not every workplace will frown on jeans so simply err on the side of caution until the first sight of Mr. Strauss in your office then work it out. Smart casual takes it up a notch and I like to think of it for guys as the moment right before the tie and jacket come out. Business/informal would be the point when said jacket and tie comes out. The professional woman is now in her heels and stockings, fitted skirt or slacks and tailored jacket or perhaps a Jackie-O dress with a belted waist as Lady Obama is known to rock it.

Black tie/formal would be the moment when (and this is a full Bajan reference ah-comin) the Harmony dress comes out. Of course there are a number of local designers to choose from  and local department stores from which to select your showstoppers but when someone says to me “the Harmony dresses were out” I know it was no place for a kitten heel or Old Navy flip-flop. Men wear tuxedos and women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy separates to black tie affairs. Some events will be Black Tie Optional or Black Tie Invited and this gives you more freedom but still an indication of the type of event it is and it is even said that wearing black is the safest bet. Though I haven’t heard it in Barbados yet there is also Creative Black Tie where you can add the funk to your formal but for the Young & Fabulous this goes without mentioning.

Hope you learned something! I know what I learned…There is no simply elegant!

YFB March Issue- Events- Beerly Legal 2011 {Natalie G}

Off to a banging start or so I heard. Our valued readers know for events like this fashionably late is more my style. Arriving in the heat of the party after 1am ‘BEERLY LEGAL’ was in full swing. As I was told by one patron on my way to the bar: “WE AINT CARE IT’S CARNIVAL IN TNT AND WE HERE AND WE GOING TIL 5AM”. Carnival was definitely in the air for the night, with the perfect mix of Caribbean nationalities the fete had a “well behaved crowd”, free of major incidence.
The Drinks
Through the gates, passing that initial crowd and on to the bar, although crowded, the service was fast the selection of drinks was good. The law lads and lasses were eager to serve and please and party goers were not suffering from any shortage when it came to their ‘liquid friends’.

The Music
“You could get with this or you could get with that” and boy oh boy that’s exactly how I felt. With our Caribbean heritage really shining through, with music from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Dominica dominating the turntables, it was good to hear everything from Vybzl Kartel to David Rudder. There was something for all ages and audiences.

The Crowd – Caribbean Unity
With the greeting of open arms by the door from Jamaican and Bajan law students, who were very elated to have the the YFB family covering the event , I could sit and ramble on … but I’ll let them tell you for themselves:

Kevyn  (Barbados)  - “Nice Vibe good music spacious and can only get better its only 2am”

Kevon (Barbados) – “Good Time. Good Drinks. Good Atmosphere”

Valine (St. Lucia) Humanities & Education – “Nice Social Vibes”

Debbie (Belize) Law – “Really Good Turnout. Definitely enjoying myself!”

Sheena (Jamaica) Law – “It been fun! Having a Great time really glad the crowd is behaving bad but in a good way!”

Simone (Trinidad) Social Sciences- “Cool easy going vibe. Great Music!”

Billy (St. Vincent) Social Sciences – “I wish there was more media here, definitely too many lights but I’m having a blast regardless”

The night also saw performances by Fatom Dundeal and Jarell ‘Meatman’ Fenton. Just before 4am we received the results of the Power Soca Monarch Competition and the Beerly Legal Posee definitely took “ADVANTAGE” of that situation being “WOTLESS” as the deejay played the winning tunes.

Beerly Legal gets my 2 thumbs up and I’m sure the freshers are looking forward to the many events for the upcoming UWEEVAL this month.

YFB March Issue- Music- Fully Loaded: The Band {Risse C}

Any Wednesday you are in St. Lawrence Gap, McBrides is the location to be part of the Reggae Experience compliments the band ‘Fully Loaded’. Since their inception in 2008, the name has become synonymous with reggae music in Barbados and across the region, being the choice for the major reggae shows both as headliners and backing band to local and international artistes.

In 2011, guided by their mantra ‘Upliftment through music', Fully Loaded continues to win the hearts of fans. The band is currently working with Grammy award winning Barbadian Jimmy ‘Senya’ Haynes  and the up and coming music maven Fabian ‘Minim’ Worrell  in the production of tracks for their upcoming album, which includes the unreleased track  ‘Freedom of Speech’ and the previously released tracks ‘Gunman’, ‘Soldier’, ‘Shine the Light’. Listening to their music you will instantaneously hear a sound which exudes positivity, inspiration and love. The original tracks not only warm the heart, but leaves you with food for thought, as one can easily identify on a very personal level and witness what's happening in today's society oozing from the lyrics.

Don’t make the assumption however, that this is just another reggae band. ‘Fully Loaded’ is versatile to say the least, fusing different genres into their performances, you are sure to hear some pop, R&B, soca and even a tinge of rock at any given time during a set. With lead vocals by Buggy Nhakente, Simon Pipe on guitar, David Haynes on bass, Daniel Medford on vocals and keyboards, Mikey Ross on keyboards, Jamal Browne on drums, Tabitha Johnson & Vanessa Lee on background vocals and Kevyn Callender as the sound engineer, expect to see roles being switched with smooth transition, truly showcasing that the band is Fully Loaded by name and by nature.

In an industry where the part is deemed better than a whole, many potential bands have been dissected due to persons being interested in specific members, and this rings true to Fully Loaded as well. However, this is embraced and viewed as contributing to the individual development of each member, which can only have positive results across the board. Members fully support each other in solo ventures, giving their support whenever and wherever needed. With regard to the support that local music is given in Barbados by radio stations and deejays alike, the band has seen much improvement over the years, but believe that the incorporation of local music into the regular rotation of international tracks will “showcase that our local productions are truly up to par and sometimes surpass international productions”.

 An integral part for reggae shows such as ‘Reggae on the Hill’, ‘The Barbados Music Festival’, ‘The Beres Hammond Show - 2 Worlds Collide’, plus the ‘Queen Ifrica & Tony Rebel’ show, they are more than experts on the treatment of local artistes at shows and events. Once a controversial talking piece by many other artistes, the members are of the same opinion that the situation has improved with some promoters, but they “cannot wait to see the day when all artistes on every show, no matter where they are from, receive the same good quality treatment from all promoters.”

In essence, Barbados’ future as being one of the premiere sources for reggae music in the world is a bright one, with bands like ‘Fully Loaded’ at the helm, the course is well charted and the success is just on the horizon.

YFB February Issue- People- Elle King {Risse C}

Confidence, determination and patience are three characteristics which supermodel Elle King has credited to her success in the international model arena thus far. Unlike the scripted shows where young girls dream of being models from the time they could wobble in their mother’s heels, Elle’s initial career aspiration was to become a veterinarian, which stemmed from her passion for animals and she has plans on opening a clinic in the future.

 In 2006, she walked in the Cave Shepherd Barbados Fashion Week and shortly after was offered to appear in BET’s annual fashion show ‘Rip the Runway’. This gained her much recognition locally and internationally and placed her among the likes of other supermodels such as Tenielle Stoute and Sara Collins. With a career that has taken her to various countries, she has come to the realization that as a model, she is also an ambassador for her country. She is usually greeted with the question, “so where are you from?” which when answered, stirs up even more curiosity, since many people have never heard about Barbados. She enjoys talking and promoting her country any chance she gets, knowing how vital tourism is to our economy.

Currently based in South Africa to build her portfolio, Elle is signed to RED Model Management NYC and Base Model Agency. Thus far, her accolades include but are not limited to: shooting her first commercial with renowned Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani for Woolworth South Africa, becoming the face of Vichy L’Oreal in Africa and opening the fashion showcase for Patricia Field, ‘Sex in The City’ stylist/designer.

Elle named local designer Shanika Burnett of Shakad Designs and international  designer Lavin as presently being her favourites and stated that “being a Bajan model has also worked in my favour, since I stand out from the competition as they’re few models working internationally from Barbados and the Caribbean in general”.

Even models have a day off, and Elle takes full advantage of these rare occasions. As an island girl, the beach is her second home and coupled with a good book, completes her perfect day R&R. She also like bike riding and since being relocated to South Africa has taken a keen interest in hiking. Her pet peeves include poor customer service, know-it-alls and being late, the latter being a key aspect of a model’s day to day, which can make or break their career.

Elle has great plans in motion for her future in the industry, having already walked in shows for Patricia Field, Halston and Monique Lhuillier, she would love to add Bottega Veneta, Lanvin and Chanel, but this list is not exhausted in the least.

She advises young women who want to pursue a career in the industry to take that leap of faith if they are truly passionate about modeling, but warns that this is no walk in the park or the runway for that matter. The industry is very competitive and cut throat so you must be able to roll with the punches and come out on top.

YFB February Issue-Style-Love n' Relationships {Niki H}

In the “I Confess” column of the January 1, 2011 edition of the Nation Newspaper, a letter was published that caused me immense distress.

The writer (let’s call her Bi-Why) mentions that her man is “a good lover”, respectful, “patient and tolerant”; he actually listens, seeks to “build her confidence”, is not focused solely on sex but is however, “fantastic in bed… and extremely sensitive to [her] responses”, and treats her better than any man has treated her before; he likes to dress nicely and keeps a neat appearance. Oh and he has a found a friend in lotion (“…his elbows are not white…”).

*crickets* Yea so ummm…. What is the problem?????

These are all good attributes that many women are currently seeking in a mate (wid nuh luck at all).

Well, she alludes to something that concerns her:

[. . .] he encourages me to play with him with my fingers, and when I do this he behaves in a manner I have never experienced with a man before.

*Gasp* (not really).

Fine, everyone is allowed to have concerns in a relationship – it’s normal. But Bi-Why’s concern only arises after she discusses her relationship with her bff who advises Bi-Why that her boyfriend may be bisexual.

Let me be clear that my intention and purpose here is not to ridicule.  From here on out I am speaking to everyone, with the above situation as a reference.

In Bi-Why’s case, There are a number of mistakes, which we all commonly make that ruin good relationships.

Letting outsiders influence your happiness in your relationship. I’m sure all your friends will have good intentions and try to protect you from heartache (sarcastic much?). Someone told me once to never tell your friends about what is going on in your sex life, because that stirs up curiosity. And we dun know how many cats curiosity send to de gallows! What happens in your bedroom (or wherever else you like to get freaky) is your business! Bi-Why mentioned no problems or unease in the relationship prior to her BFF planting that seed of doubt!

Stop relying on de girls or de fellas to fix your problems with their magnificent advice. Keep it 100! All your “friends” are not your friends and as such (a) don’t actually want your relationship to work and therefore (b) should not be advising you on relationships. If you must consult a friend, it should be the one or few that you trust the most, with a most objective perspective, and a genuine concern for you. Your relationship is not meant for public consumption!

You are in a relationship with him/her not your girls or boys- Take up your issues with your spouse. Your girlfriend should not find out from your best friend’s girlfriend that you don’t like her going out to the club 4 nights a week.

If you don’t trust him/her then why are you with them?- Trust is the cornerstone of every relationship. If Bi-Why is looking at him wondering if those same hands have caressed a man’s face, and the thought has done irreparable damage to her security and trust in the relationship, then she should do the right thing and move on. Staying in a relationship with no trust is basically volunteering to be tortured (not in the S&M way either).

Read the signs-They are always signs. Oprah is right. You have to pay attention. Since Bi-Why has stated that this is not the first man she has engaged in anal play with, if Bi-Why’s boyfriend is indeed bisexual then something more significant than well-lotion elbows & a hair cut every week will have to suffice.

YFB February Issue- Style- Health n Fitness {Dre J}

If the extent of your daily exercise regimen is to search for the remote control for the television or going to the refrigerator for a midnight snack, then unfortunately you living a sedentary lifestyle which places you at risk for the many health complications which go hand in hand with being a ‘couch potato’. Being active doesn’t mean you have to be a fitness fanatic, but an increase in your daily activity can start with a 30 minute walk.

FACT: A lack of physical activity is one of the leading PREVENTABLE causes of death worldwide.

FACT: A sedentary lifestyle can contribute to or be a risk factor for:

•Anxiety
•Cardiovascular disease
•Depression
•Diabetes
•High blood pressure
•Obesity
•Osteoporosis

Another risk is muscle atrophy - the shrinking and weakening of muscles which subsequently makes them more susceptible to physical injury, so it’s like they say if you don't use it you lose it. This is usually associated with persons in their senescence, but can also be found in younger generations. It should be noted that there is a direct link between physical activity and the human immune system, less activity equates to a weaker immune system.

Sedentary lifestyles carry with it the same risks as SMOKING, and we all know smoking kills. Physical activity at any level can: make the heart stronger; reduce blood pressure; help control stress levels and help maintain or lose weight.

Some exercise is better than none, so let's get out there and get active.

YFB February Issue- Style-Fashion n' Beauty {Paula J}

Beauty is skin deep. What is inside the black woman, or any woman regardless of ethnicity, is of tantamount importance if not much more important than her weave, false lashes, afro, any of it. But ladies (and gents brave enough to read this) the body is a temple and it must be treated as such – what people see and most importantly what you see when you step in front of the mirror can make or break your day, your week even your life!

So what does the young, fabulous, Bajan gal do to keep on top of her game? We can’t fit all that into one article so (permission to be redundant?) I’ll start at the beginning – skin care. Now guys don’t stop reading just yet, skin care is asexual… like Godzilla? I just lost my one reader. Cleansing, toning and moisturizing daily are the three basic steps all of us can take – men, women, and even children to ensure we avoid breakouts, wrinkles, and a variety of skin ailments and remain beautiful on the outside. The face is the most exposed part of the body so it requires our care and attention. P.S Ladies, clean skin is the best palate for your fabulous makeup!

Welcome to the Best 5 Minutes of Your Life

And I promise you will not have to call your ex! All you need is warm water, a wash cloth, facial cleanser or foaming face wash, toner, after shave (for men) or daily acne cleansing pads, cotton balls (or suitable equivalent) and a daily moisturizer with at least SPF 15.

Step 1 – Cleansing:
Moisten the wash cloth with warm water. Then moisten the face using both hands starting at the base of the neck and working up to the face with upward and outward circular motions.  Next take a nickel-sized portion of facial cleanser and dab small amounts of it all over the face and neck. Then moisten fingertips with the warm water and work in small circular motions upward and outward starting on the neck and working up to the face. Once we’re all covered then we use warm water to rinse that off thoroughly.

Step 2 – Toning
Using the toner, after shave, or cleansing pads you need to cover the cleansed surface of the neck and face. I usually put a small portion of it on a cotton ball and rub the solution and my neck and face in the same upward and outward motions used for cleansing. Why do we keep using these upward and outward motions? This gentle massage is doing the skin wonders and you’ll thank me in your 60’s! I know you’re with me now.

Step 3 – Last one! Let’s moisturize…
Dab small drops of moisturizer on each side of the neck, chin, lower jaw, on each cheek, each side of the nose, each eye lid, each temple and about three dabs across the forehead. Smooth the lotion all over the neck and face (I know you see it coming) in upward and outward circular motions as before. By now you may feel exhausted just reading it. But as my closest girlfriends will point out much to my embarrassment, if I can do it in all my lazy glory then anyone can! Of course there is more… much much more to skin care but what reason would you have to read next issue if I said it all now?

YFB February Issue- Music- Azman 'De First Wun' {Risse C}

From the get go Azman established that they aren't your average quartet, but a coalition of young men who are willing to push the envelope where local music is concerned. Their debut album 'De First Wun' which dropped in 2009, is lyrically multifaceted - from the daily struggles of Barbadian youths to battling with de girls bumpa in de fete to the lackluster approach  by local deejays and radio stations to Barbadian music.

 Azman is the collaboration of four immensely talented young men- Levitance, Dee, Doddy and Gibbzy Dan. A group who has pioneered their own genre, known as fling, there is no questioning their originality. One must agree, some of the content calls for an in-depth knowledge of Barbadian culture and slang that is readily used to spit the ciphers which require an attentive ear and a sharp mind.

From the sound of the bell in the introduction, you get the impression that a battle is about to ensue, but listening to tracks such as 'Still Livin', 'Play On' and 'Dreams', you begin to realize the challenge is present but the nemesis varies according to the situation. Regardless of a mother telling you to stop wasting time with music and get to the books, a dead end job or a radio station who lost your cds, Azman presses forward in the face of all obstacles.

The flipside of Azman however, brings the 'wufflessness' to the fore, with 'Too Wutliss', 'Wuffliness' and 'Gurl Child', you get a play by play of the social interactions in the fete, from the tease to the chase. Mesmerized but not willing to accept defeat, they stand their ground when 'de girls pooch back de bumpas'.
At varying intervals, you come across individual tracks from each member, simply entitled 'Unorthodox'. Needless to say, these solo tracks only reaffirm the potecy of each member, which meshes beautifully to create the Azman sound.

In the closing track, are snippets of spoken word from the popular poet Adrian Greene. This throws the final nails in the coffin, regarding the fickle nature of the support that local artistes who strive to produce local vocals receive. With no sugarcoating whatsoever, they lay it down to the nitty gritty, not losing the metaphorical twist which they are known for, but casting light on the grave issues which they faced on their musical journey.

Azman, the real real bajan music, with the adequate amount of dialect, metaphors and alliterations, coupled with effortless flow, in de words of Barabus in 'Represent'-"I bring you Azman, is dem I recommend! Wuh tell me where you could find men dat could better dem?"

YFB January Issue-People-iNDRANi {Risse C}

Indra Denys Rudder also known as iNDRANi is passionate and dedicated in all that she pursues, this young woman is an accomplished author/singer/songwriter/vocal coach-  powerhouse by definition.

Moving out at the age of 17, she worked 5 jobs to support herself, establishing independence at a very young age. A name synonymous with local and regional music, iNDRANi  got her start singing in local nightclubs with Legend, a group of which prominent calypsonian Natahlee Burke was also a member. From these humble beginnings, iNDRANi has become an icon in the local and regional music industry, with an impressive resume. Working with the likes of reggae kings Shaggy and Mr. Vegas and soca star Machel Montano HD, being the original voice for Sharon of the popular telecommunications ad for LIME, as well as the voice in the commercials and songs for popular DJs Verseewild , Lil Rick and Salt. No wonder she has 3 nominations at the 2011 Barbados Music Awards.

This busy bee has big plans for 2011, some of which include: the development of music in the public schools and children homes of Barbados, successfully releasing her album 'Goddess Wild' which features the single 'Stronger' along with a plethora of Bajan artistes and producers, and being part of the Bajan delegation at the MIDEM Conference in Cannes, France. iNDRANi would also like to collaborate with local artistes such as Teff, Damian Marvay, Shane'Blade'Free and Buggy. One might say that she lives up to her name, Indra is the name of the Hindu God of Gods responsible for power, thunder and drops of rain.
You are probably asking "wait she don stop?", and admittedly, Indra does struggle to balance her busy schedule with other aspects of life. Nothing short of a workaholic, she usually pushes herself to the limit in order to produce exceptional work. However, when the going gets too tough, she tries to bring some equilibrium to the scale. On her social side, she finds time to unwind by dancing, reading, watching movies, working out and cooking (her favourite). With reference to a Mr., she candidly states that there is none present at the moment, but when the time comes "he'll find me and life will make a beautiful space carved just for him".
So how does iNDRANi feel about the Barbadian music industry? "Wha we got talent galore bout hey!" and she continues by stating the label signings of Bajan artistes come as no surprise to her, but cannot fathom why the powers that be keep letting others dip in our 'oil mine' of talent for free. More local music should be in rotation, artistes should receive better treatment and payment for performances and the government should invest in the talent because an artiste is a walking advertisement for the country.

When asked about persons who have made it all possible, iNDRANi lists numerous influences. After the Most Divine, she mentions her mother and Aunt Lorna along with her huge circle of friends. She gives credit to Barbadian musical icons such as Eddy Grant for teaching her everything she knows and Chris Allman for her first recording experience. Other noted were Viking Tundah, Minim of Million Dollar Music and Grammy nominated engineer and producer Jeff Glixman who bought her first guitar.

Ya want 3 words to sum she up?
'Full ah love, talented an brave ya see she dey'

YFB January Issue-Style-Love n' Relationships {Niki H}

A friend recently started talking to this new guy who, for whatever reason, demanded that she punctuate correctly whilst they engaged in informal text or Blackberry messenger conversations.
Ok...punctuation – no problem! Except that his spelling was so horrible that he needed Jesus to punctuate his sentences to save them from the sin of his misspellings. (He wants to be reimbursted for all practicle intense and purposes).

Yet another friend was in a relationship with a guy who had the gumption to request that she bring along a friend to join in their carnal festivities.  The request itself was not appalling. What confused her was that what he was bringing to the table was less entertaining than fireworks and candy… or watching paint dry , for that matter. So his request to add another party to a situation where the person already involved was less than satisfied was just baffling on all fronts…and backs.

My point is that Unreasonableness is easy to recognize. You know who this unreasonable person is in your circle and you know what to expect, right? (hopefully you don’t know more than one, and if you do you need new friends).

We all have that one friend. You know what I mean! The one that when you answer the phone you wished you had screened the call. One friend that always needs a ride, some money, or a listening ear that bleeds from endless hours of whining repeatedly about his/her crazy lover. It’s the same friend that is nowhere to be found when you have a problem. You can rely on this friend about as much as you can rely on a goat to recite Shakespeare.

But what if… you are that person? What if you are the one that can’t spell, but asks others to punctuate or the one with subpar sex for “one” who wants to bring another to the party?
If you are indeed -->that guy/gal<-- I sincerely hope that you have friends that tell you like it is. That is the most certain way to stay aware of your level of unreasonableness. Unfortunately everyone does not have friends that give it to ‘em straight up, no chaser.

After all we are human and, so being imperfect.
As fate would have it, my concern here is the disagreeable lover. That may be you. It may be your partner. It could definitely be the friend that drains you through your ears of your entire blood supply.
The disagreeable/unreasonable lover is one that always wants a significant other who meets a list of requirements. The unreasonable lover (UL) also likes the significant other to bring things and qualities to the table that he/she cannot produce him/herself.

I can see you now nodding your head in agreement, as if you haven’t been guilty of this in the past. None of us are immune to the UL. As a matter of fact, I will risk betting that being unreasonable is the reason at least 40% of people who will read this are single and having trouble finding or staying in a serious relationship (read: friendship as well) . (figure attained from the Institute of  the Recesses of my Brain).
Bottom line is you cannot ask someone to:

a) provide things that you cannot first provide for yourself

b) do things for the relationship that you are unwilling to do.

YFB January Issue- Style- Health n' Fitness {Dre J}

With the start of a New Year, most persons probably make the usual New Years resolution to drop the weight they acquired over the holidays.  Unfortunately somewhere around February, that resolution is quickly forgotten until Crop Over when everyone rushes to the gym to get in shape for their costumes.
Let's break that cycle for 2011 with a few tips to leading a healthier lifestyle:

Go easy on the alcohol- sad to say it has absolutely no nutritional benefits and are empty calories. Easier said than done, especially in Barbados where drinking is the national pass time when partying or socializing. Try to reduce, for example 6 beers can become 3 or 4.
Eat slower - studies have shown persons who eat slowly feel full faster than those who eat quickly, cutting out the need to be going back for 2nd's and even 3rd's which increase the calorie intake.

Most importantly GET ACTIVE!!!!! Everyone doesn't have to join a gym but a sedentary lifestyle is the number one reason why persons gain weight. Thirty minutes a day is a good start and believe it or not, is very effective in helping to prevent many diseases associated with obesity. Time constraints due to work and personal responsibilities are totally understandable, but your health should take priority as well. Start slow with 30 minutes a day: 25 minute walk followed by 5 minutes of skipping, ladies skipping is a great exercise to tone the calves but no matter what activity you choose always remember some exercise is better than no exercise.

Setting realistic goals- even though it may be cliche to say Rome wasn't built in a day, this quote happens to be true. People generally get very frustrated when they don't see results as quickly as they would like and then quit; this is exactly what you want to avoid. By setting realistic short term goals, you will slowly progress towards your overall long term goal while maintaining the confidence and enthusiasm to move forward since are seeing results as you progress.

Eating healthy- let’s be honest Christmas equates to over indulgence for many of us, whether it’s ham, chocolate or endless grate cake. Don't get me wrong, you should enjoy the holidays, however it doesn’t have to lead to obesity. I am by no means a nutritional specialist ( that's another 6 month course for another time) but I do know a little Maths and essentially if you burn more calories than you consume weight loss will occur. When grocery shopping, opt for healthy foods such as fruits as snacks as opposed to chips or chocolates; instead of frying, bake stew or grill your meat. Less fattening foods here and a little more fruits and salad there, and you will be on your way to a healthier lifestyle and all the benefits which accompany it.

YFB January Issue- Style-Fashion n' Beauty {Nick C}

In 2010 we saw many Barbadians rocking some of the international fashion trends to hit our shores- from trendy animal prints to wild back breaking heels. So, what do we have to look forward to this year? 2011 promises to be an epic year in fashion. We have seen metal outfits from Lady Gaga and even her outfit made entirely of meat- with this heat in Barbados that is one fashion trend we would sure want to miss out on- furthermore, we like our meat well cooked and served on a plate! Here are some summer trends for us to consider for 2011:

>Sheer Maxi Dresses<
Sheer fabrics are nothing new to fashion, for those who want to be sexy without showing off too much skin, sheer fabrics are ideal. You can play them up by mixing bright colours with dark sheer fabrics and prints.  Sheer maxi dresses have become a big hit with many designers and are gracing the catwalks of brands like Dolce & Gabbana and Fendi.

 >Heavy Metal<
Metallic colours are bold and daring gold, silver and bronze can be seen on California Girl Katie Perry. These pieces no longer have to be boring and can be worn as party outfits and we know there is always a party in Bim.

>Tail Hems<
Dresses and tops that are tapered (short at the front and longer at the back) are expected to be a hit for 2011. They fill the void between a mini and a mid-length and provide you with modest comfort. Tail hems can be very flirty and offer a fun twist on everyday dresses, skirts and tops. Included in the look for womens boutiques for their 2011 collections, tail hem blouses can be great alternatives for work wear with tailored jackets, while the more casual tops can allow you to still incorporate one thing that us Bajan girls love to wear- leggings. Leggings worn with tail hemmed shirts can be very classy and casual.

>Tassels<
I know many of you know what tassels are, you remember that little thing hanging from your hat at graduation well that is expected to be another big hit for this summer and will not only be seen on clothes but yes- you guessed it on shoes, bags, hats and belts and jewellery as well. This new insurgence of tassels promises for them to be big, bold and bright.

>Stripes<
Stripes, much like jeans, are pretty much here to stay but the style associated with stripes is often changing. With a mixture of colour combination from bright yellows and reds, keep the classic style fresh, to the characteristic sailor blue and white.

>1970s<
Many trends are recycled and given a modern twist. We expect to see the rise of the seventies once more in the fashion arena, with denim skirts and jackets. As we welcome back flares and bell bottoms, you can leave your afro picks and hair spray at home because fashion is not going quite that far with the seventies.

So there you have it, an inside look at what to look forward to for 2011 fashion trends. Remember to wear what suits you and you can also put your own personal twist to any of these trends and make it your own. I am sure many more fashion surprises are yet to come so keep your eyes glued!!

YFB January Issue- Events- The 2011 Barbados Music Awards {Natalie G}

The 6th annual Barbados Music Awards was a theatrical masterpiece. From staging to lighting, seating arrangements and an amazing sound system, Timeless Entertainment must be commended for a job well done.

The communicated starting time was 7pm. However, I arrived fashionably late OF COURSE at the precisely timed instant of 7:15 pm. Wanting to be fashionably late and not Bajan late, I by passed the hustle and bustle of the catwalk length red carpet at the entrance of the VIP so I could be seated for the start of the event. However, my master plan caught a minor snag as I was whisked away to an interview with CBC's Pearson Bowen who did a magnificent job of covering all the red carpet and behind the scenes of the glitz and glamour.

At 7:30 I was seated and shortly after an announcement was made- there was some confusion in the printing of the tickets of which some stated a 7pm start which in fact was really the start of the red carpet event  (there goes my fashionably late into geekishly early !! sigh). Producer of the show Ronnie Morris quickly clarified the mix up and at 8 pm, Mac Fingall announced the start of the show with the national anthem by an all boys group "The Faithful Few" and that they were. These young men put their own special touch on a wonderful variation to the national anthem, a perfect start to the night.

Not only star studded, with acknowledgments of guest like Hon. Minister of Sports, Family and Culture Mr. Stephen Lashley, Tessanne Chin & Wayne Wonder  but  was also filled with 100% Bajan splendid performances. Peach & Superstar backed by the High Grade and Timeless Bands started the performances off with a soulful rendition of their reggae hit "Pressure Point" .They were followed by other fantastic performances from the Reggae Experience with Daniel of the band Fully Loaded, Hotta Flames and Buggy Nhkente who reassured the audience that the future of conscious, quality reggae music in Barbados is in perfectly capable hands. Having just returned from an international show in an arena holding more than 15 000 people, Timeless Entertainments sound system was of excellent quality.

Emcee for the night Mac Fingall was not to be outshone. As a true master of ceremonies he kept the show flowing, tasteful and hilariously entertaining with comedy that kept the audience occupied and in stitches. Lifetime Achievement awards, Cornerstone awards and awards of Merit went to a host of individuals including: Richard Stoute , Allan Shepherd  and Shirley Stewart among others but the most touching of all was witnessing Smokey Burke on stage not only accepting his award in fine form and in great spirit after his battle with cancer, but seeing him also perform so skillfully "Up On The Roof" a Drifters Classic.

Rihanna cleaned up taking home a handful of awards this year for hits like "Hard", "Love the Way You Lie" and "Rude Boy". Fellow international star Shontelle also took away an award for her smash single "Impossible".

Noteable mentions were the inspirational gospel performance by Allison Norville Forde,  the oh so smooth Biggie Irie , the party starters Mr. Dale, Lil Rick and the Hypa Kids, the classic love ballad by Shirley Stewart"Walk Away", the St. Leonard's Boys Choir and international Superstar Faith Evans.  My favourite performance for the night came from Terisha Holder .MAN OH MAN!! This girl has got a set of pipes out of this world. With antics of Fantasia Barrino and the style to match, sultry yet smooth like Anita Baker, strong and powerful like Ms. Labelle herself. Talent is an understatement when describing Terisha, she should be signed, sealed and delivered, definitely a star in the making.

I would give the show 8 / 10 as improvements can always be made. I think the public would like to know the judging criteria for the nominations of international artist alongside Barbadian artist. This was supported by grumbles a few rows behind me expressing some confusion into how Eminem feat. Rihanna "Love the Way You Lie" was nominated in the category of Barbadian artistes.

In my opinion the awards have seen a great improvement over the years and can only continue to serve as a platform to propel Bajan artistes further, giving them that opportunity where the industry says a big thank you for your hard work and dedication; your efforts have not gone unnoticed .Kudos to Timeless Barbados Entertainment Agency and I look forward to the 2012 awards.

YFB January Issue- Music- Fault Station's 'The Final Third' {Risse C}

'For substance deprived rhymes to rise and make a mark in this. Like partying is all they see in this, pardon me the power of the spoken word to reach the audience'  -Fault Station

In an industry which struggles to be recognized as a viable enterprise in Barbados, the rap/hip hop genre can be considered the weakest link. However, the duo group Fault Station knowingly accepts the challenge to create lyrically strong, socially aware and thought provoking music; setting them apart from many of their international counterparts.

Kirkland 'Kas' Seale and Jabari 'Montana' Jemmott are kicking down the door and causing a disturbance in the local rap scene with 'The Final Third'. Even though they consider themselves rappers, their sound is anything but generic. Listening to their 2010 debut mixtape, produced by Stewart 'Strat' Carter of Triple E Studios, you will witness an amalgamation of sound ranging from rock and roll to ballads; with each track using an original beat- not the usual associated with the term 'mixtape'.

With no two tracks alike, it is testament to their hard work. No strangers to the long studio hours and the fine tuning by Montana, a self professed perfectionist, Kas's studio time transforms him to his alter ego, moving away from his usual introvert and becoming a beast on the mic, spitting rhymes like they are his last.

This 12 track compilation is capable of being a hit with any audience, from 'Welcome to the Show' -an introduction to the entire experience and kudos, to 'Pleasure Doin Business' -a story about a man who yields to sexual temptation but home girl turns out to be a con artist. Other bangers on the album are 'Winner' feat. B-Roca and Teff; 'The Departed' feat. Chrissy Headley; 'Prelude to the Next Time' feat. B-Nice and 'Make Way' a Million Dollar Music production.

No explanation can do justice to this musical masterpiece- you just gotta listen to it!The flow: insane, the lyrics: poetic, the message: raw and uncut. With the heart and soul of winners, these two are destined for greatness in 2011 and beyond.
